Pest Control in Sydney and Rockdale | The European House Borer

With a name as forward as the ‘house borer’, you know this particular pest must have raised some eyebrows somewhere. Few species are actually named for the destruction they cause; this one stands out.

The European House Borer is a hylotrupe, a member of a genus of insects who are well known for their habits of consuming untreated timber. In spite of their name in some areas – the ‘Old House Borer’ – this insect typically goes for younger houses, with younger wood. It is thought that the higher resin content of younger wood serves to attract the larva. However, when they do infect older houses, the damage is considerably greater, as the larva must consume considerably more wood to survive.

These creatures, in their larval stage, chew their way through solid, untreated wood, potentially reducing its strength by a considerable amount. Pest control measures in Sydney and Rockdale have taken note of the spread of this species, and many wood products – in particular, pine from Western Australian forests – is now under considerable scrutiny.

Meanwhile, for homes in Perth where the EHB pest is already hard at work, pest controllers have experimented with listening devices for walls, to detect the quiet ‘chewing’ of the bugs, and to get some early warning. These devices, once fully developed, will be useful for a number of pest control measures in Sydney and Rockdale – including termites, who also produce a subtle noise.
