Most of us think of cockroaches as nasty pests that invade our homes. However, there’s a lot more to them than that. These insects are some of the oldest creatures around, are incredibly hardy, and exist in some really severe climates. They can squeeze into incredibly tiny spaces, live on almost nothing, and are extremely fast. Here’s a look at a few facts about these creepy little insects that you might not have known about.

Did you know that cockroaches have been around for much longer than the dinosaurs? It’s true – the earliest fossil we have of a cockroach is over two hundred and eighty million years old. That’s eighty million years before the first dinosaur fossils. Earlier insects that eventually developed into cockroaches have been found, too. They date back as far as three hundred and fifty million years ago.

There are also lots of different kinds of cockroaches, from the tiny kind that infest houses to the largest species – six inches in length and with a wingspan of over a foot. To European descended people, this might seem gross, but it’s perfectly normal in many places. When the shelter capacity was increased, they all sheltered together. This kind of cooperation may help them survive. There are even cockroaches that are kept as pets. The most famous is the Madagascar hissing cockroach.

How to Win Hide and Seek Against Cockroaches

No one likes cockroaches.  They’re large, quick-moving, insidious pests that can quickly take over your house.  They eat human food and pet food, and carry microbes on their bodies that can be potentially dangerous to people, including tropomyosin, which has been linked with asthma.  Finding one may be a sign that you have an infestation somewhere in your house.

Are “German” Cockroaches Invading Sydney?

It sounds strange to think of cockroaches as having a nationality, but…

We have noticed a larger than usual number of pest control clients requesting help to eradicate “German” cockroaches recently.

German Cockroaches are properly called Blattella germanica, and to the naked eye they are simply a smaller version of the “Australian” cockroach.

If you ever have to ID a German cockroach, you should know that they are typically about 1.3 cm to 1.6 cm in length and tan to light brown in colour.

They may also have two dark parallel streaks running from the head to the base of the wings. Although it has wings, it is unable to sustain flight.

According to Wikipedia,

The German cockroach is originally from Asia and very common in Russia, not in Germany, and it is also very closely related to the Asian cockroach, to the extent that to the casual observer they appear nearly identical and may be mistaken for the other.

So it appears that this is a case of mistaken (national) identity.

Seriously though, owing to their compact size, ability to breed quickly and their speed and agility, German cockroaches can sometimes prove difficult to eradicate.

How To Prevent and Control Cockroach Infestations in Sydney

Sydney is home to two major types of cockroach infestations: those of the big, ugly Australian variety and those of the smaller German cockroaches.

Despite their names, these insects are not necessarily associated with national geography, and can be found in any size or type of home. As cockroaches are known for their transmission of diseases and their contamination of food, it is in the best interest of every citizen of Sydney to prevent and control all cockroach infestations.

The ideal path to take is one of prevention. Like all living critters, cockroaches need a place to live, food, and water. In order to keep your Sydney property clean and free of cockroach infestations, the best approach is to deny them these three essentials.
